History

Appellate Advocates is a non-profit public defender organization formed in 1995. We represent individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and are assigned to our office by the court.

Our main work is appeals, but we have expanded our practice over time to include special projects representing individuals who are seeking to lessen the consequences of their criminal convictions. These special projects include representing our clients at Sex Offender Registry hearings and appeals, Post-Conviction Immigration Relief motions and hearings, and drug law or post-release supervision resentencings. Most recently, we have begun an Innocence Investigation project, in recognition that, for some clients, an appeal will not address the core injustice of a wrongful conviction.

We also have a social worker on staff at our Reentry Project to help our clients successfully reintegrate into society after being released from incarceration.
