Volunteer Program
Appellate Advocates maintains a pro bono volunteer program in conjunction with such law firms as Arnold & Porter, Chadbourne & Parke, Labaton Sucharow, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Under the supervision of an Appellate Advocates attorney and a liaison at each firm, associates brief and argue cases in the Appellate Division, Second Department. Under the guidance of the Appellate Advocates attorney, each associate selects issues and plans briefing strategies. The associate writes the brief under close supervision, and later orally argues the case after thorough preparation. This program provides firm associates with an opportunity to brief and argue cases of their own, and Appellate Advocates attorneys with an opportunity to share their expertise with lawyers who might never otherwise be exposed to the practice of criminal law for indigent defendants.
